Commander Kevin Honig
MEET THE COMMANDER
Post Commander Kevin Honig enlisted in the US Navy in
November 1986, went to Basic Training at RTC Great Lakes in February 1987, and
went to Aviation Ordnanceman school at NAS Memphis in May 1987.
His first command was aboard the USS Enterprise CVN-65,
where he served in both G-3 Division as a Magazine Trunk supervisor, and G-1
Flight Deck, where he worked on the Bomb Farm, distributing ordnance to the on-board
squadrons.
Kevin also spent a year as a shipboard Master-at-Arms (the on-board
Police Force).
While on board, on April 18, 1988, the USS Enterprise and
her Battle Group, acted against the Iranian Navy, Operation Praying Mantis, the
largest at sea Naval battle since World War 2.
In December of 1989, while pulling back into port at Subic
Naval Station, the USS Enterprise was called into action for Operation Classic Resolve
and helped put down the attempted coup of Philippine President Corazon Aquino.
Kevin was released from active duty after completing a World
Cruise in April,1990 and affiliated with the USS Guadalcanal LPH-7 readiness Unit,
a Navy Reserve unit based out of Amityville, NY,
In February 1991, he was mobilized in support of Operation
Desert Storm, where he was stationed on board the USS Guadalcanal LPH-7.
After Desert Storm, Kevin transferred to Maritime Patrol
Squadron (VP)-64 based out of NASJRB Willow Grove, PA. where he was assigned as an Inflight Ordnanceman
on P-3 Orion’s. He made deployments to NAS Bermuda, Naval Station Roosevelt Roads
PR, Belize, Manta Ecuador, San Salvador Brazil, Nicaragua, and Panama City
Panama, where he participated in Operation Carib Shield as part of Joint
Interagency Task Force South to combat illegal drug smuggling in the Caribbean
Sea. He has also made deployments to NAF Misawa Japan, Nas Sigonella Italy.
After September 11,2001 VP-64 was tasked with Patrols over
the Northeastern Seaboard to investigate incoming sea traffic into the New York
Port area, in support of Operation Noble Eagle
In August of 2004, Maritime Patrol Squadron (VP)-64 transitioned
from P-3 Orion’s to C-130 Hercules to become Fleet Logistics Support Squadron
(VR)-64, and Kevin went from being an Inflight Ordnanceman to a 2nd Load
Master. Kevin made deployments to Misawa Japan, Qatar, NAS Sigonella Italy.
Kevin retired with 21 years of Service, from the US Navy
Reserves in 2007. Kevin been awarded the following awards: Joint Meritorious
Unit Award/ Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation/ Navy Battle E Ribbon (3
awards)/ Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal (6 awards)/ National
Defense Service Medal (2 awards)/ Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal/ Southwest
Asia Service Medal/ Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (2 awards)/ Armed Forces
Reserve Medal (with Bronze M, and Silver
Hourglass)/ Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia)/ Kuwait Liberation Medal
(Emirate of Kuwait).
Kevin has worked for DHL Worldwide Express as an IT Field Technician,
for the last 27 years starting in 1998.
Kevin currently lives in Levittown, NY with his wife and two
sons
