Town of Hempstead Veterans Service Award

Peter Stasinski - 7/1/2018

The Town of Hempstead Veterans Service Award is presented to Veterans who have dedicated their lives to helping fellow Veterans in their time of need. On Saturday June 30th, 2018 during the "Salute to Veterans” at Town Park Point Lookout, Supervisor Laura Gillen, based on the recommendations from the Town of Hempstead Veterans Advisory Committee, presented a number of local Veterans with the town’s prestigious Veterans Service Award. Among the Veterans receiving the awards was Matthew J DeGregorio, Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Levittown-Island Trees Post 9592.

Mathew J. DeGregorio enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1968. Upon completion of Basic Training he attended school to learn his military occupational specialty in aircraft maintenance and the duties of a crew chief. When training ended he reported to his permanent duty assignment with the 602nd Fighter Squadron (Commando) which operated A-1 Skyraiders in the Southeast Asia Area of Operations which included Vietnam and Thailand. Matthew’s job was to ensure the aircraft under his charge were ready to complete Combat Search and Rescue missions along with conducting night operations as flareships.

In 1972, Matthew, now holding the rank of Sergeant, was honorably discharged from the Air Force and returned to his home in Levittown. For his service in Southeast Asia Sergeant DeGregorio received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal and other ribbons and citations. After being home for a number of years and having reintegrated back into civilian life, Matthew decided it was time to serve his fellow Veterans. In 1978 he became an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9592 in Levittown, New York and for the next 40 years he would hold many leadership and committee positions in the Post and would unselfishly volunteer thousands of hours to help improve the lives of his fellow Veterans.

It is with great pleasure and pride that the Veterans and Auxiliary members of VFW Post 9592 CONGRATULATES Commander Matthew J. Degregorio on his receiving such a great recognition from the people of the Town of Hempstead.

VFW Post 9592 would like to thank all those Post members who showed their support by attending this event, especially Roland, Andrew and Keran who performed the duties of Color Guard.
