VFW POST 9592 NEWS & EVENTS

Levittown's Earth Day Clean-Up

On Saturday April 29th members of VFW Post 9592 joined other community organizations, local officials and community residents in participating in the annual Earth Day Spring Clean-Up around Levittown. This event was sponsored by the Town of Hempstead and the Levittown Community Council. Participants all met at the Veterans Memorial Park by the Levittown Public Library at 1pm. Once they signed up for their cleaning location they gathered their rakes, brooms and garbage bags (some donated by the Town of Hempstead) and headed out. One group, consisting of VFW members and Division Avenue High School students, made their way to the large field that stretches west from the Post. In a little over an hour and under a hot sun they walked the entire field picking up all sorts of debris and garbage. They also managed to collect two water pistols, one softball and 5 golf balls. After the garbage was collected and discarded the student volunteers were invited into the Post for refreshments and a tour. They were given a brief history and explanation of some of the memorabilia that is on display throughout the Post. Particular attention was given to a plaque that list the names of those residence who lost their lives in the service of their country and to the Medal of Honor citation that was bestowed upon Stephen Edward Karopczyc for his heroic actions in Vietnam. Upon completion of the refreshments and the tour the group gathered up the borrowed tools, loaded into the Post’s Van and returned to Veterans Memorial Park.

VFW Post 9592 is proud to have been a participant in this community endeavor and would like to thank the Levittown Community Council and the Town of Hempstead for making this happen. We would also like to thank the members of the Post who participated and we hope we get more volunteers next year. Finally, we would like thank the energetic and motivated students from Division Avenue High School who volunteered their time to help beautify the grounds next to the Post.

We all helped prove that just a little positive effort from a lot of people can make for a better place to live, work and go to school.
